How to Get Spot-Free Windows: Tips and Techniques

If you’re looking to get your windows thoroughly cleaned and achieve a sparkling, spot-free finish, hiring a professional window washing company is a smart choice. But if you prefer a more hands-on approach, it is possible to clean your windows yourself and achieve excellent results. In this article, we’ll cover the squeegee method of window cleaning, which is more practical for home owners compared to the water fed pole method. We’ll provide you with the necessary tools and techniques to get your windows looking as good as new.

First, let’s talk about the tools you’ll need. To get a professional finish, it’s worth investing in a professional squeegee rubber from a dedicated cleaning supplier like “Apple Cleaning.” You’ll also need a bucket, a squeegee mop, some microfiber cloths (the yellow car detailing ones from Costco work great!), any old towels or rags, some sunlight or Dawn dish soap, and the appropriate ladders that will safely reach the windows you need to clean. All of these supplies can be found at your hardware store, cleaning supplier, or Costco.

Once you have all your equipment, it’s important to choose a day that is not too sunny and hot to clean your windows. Cleaning windows in bright sunlight can be tricky because the sun evaporates the water so quickly that you won’t be able to squeegee off the dirty water in time. Instead, pick a comfortable day with overcast skies or early morning light.

Now that you’re ready to start, follow these steps to get spot-free windows:

  1. Fill a bucket with about 2 gallons of water and 1-2 tablespoons of soap (we recommend sunlight). Mix the solution well. The sunlight soap is actually not as much for cleaning as it is to help the squeegee glide across the glass. The real secret to cleaning a window without leaving streaks is the practice of removing the liquid solution with the squeegee.
  2. Dip your squeegee mop into the bucket and get it wet. Squeeze out some of the excess water from the mop. Scrub the window with the mop, going from top to bottom and side to side to get the window wet and soapy and loosen all the dirt.
  3. Use the squeegee to remove all the dirty water from the window, leaving a streak-free finish. It’s important to use proper technique to avoid streaks. To learn how to use the squeegee correctly, check out the video below.
  4. Use the microfiber cloth to clean up the corners of the glass and give the frames a quick wipe down.

That’s it! With the right tools and techniques, you can get spot-free windows on your own. However, if you don’t want to deal with ladders and cleaning supplies, consider reaching out to your local window cleaner for a free quote. They can take care of the job for you and give you peace of mind knowing that it’s being done safely and correctly.
